The personal services business trap
If you incorporated and work mostly for one client in a way that looks like employment, the CRA can treat your corporation as a personal services business, or PSB.
What a PSB is
A PSB is where an incorporated worker would reasonably be seen as an employee of the client if the corporation were not in the way. Consultants who bill one main client through a corporation are the classic case.
Why it costs you
A PSB cannot claim the small business deduction, pays the full corporate rate plus an extra federal tax, and can deduct only a narrow set of expenses. The result is a far larger tax bill. Source: Canada Revenue Agency, What is a PSB.
How we lower the risk
We review how your contracts and day to day work are set up, flag PSB exposure before the CRA does, and structure your affairs so your position is defensible.
Where it fits your return
These decisions shape how your corporate tax (T2) is prepared. We build the return around a structure that holds up, not one that invites questions.
Sole proprietor or incorporate
Most consultants start as a sole proprietor and later ask whether incorporating is worth it. The right answer depends on your income, how many clients you serve, whether you want to leave profit in the company, and your personal services business exposure. We walk you through both paths with real numbers, then prepare and file whichever return fits, from a simple self employed tax filing to a full corporate return.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.![]()

This firm is amazingly detail focused and client centric. I have been using them since the conception of my business and without their expertise and dedication to the numbers of it all I would not be able to flourish the way I am. Furthermore, Bashar is personable, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, timely, trustworthy, genuine and all around a total win to have on any team for financial services.![]()

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.![]()
