Tax for Franchises

A franchise return has moving parts a standard business return does not. The franchise fee, the royalties, the write off over time. We prepare and file your corporate return through a CPA, so every one of those pieces is treated the right way.

Where franchise tax gets tricky

Most tax preparers treat a franchise like any other small business, and that is exactly where it goes wrong. Your franchise fee is not a cost you write off in one year, your royalties are handled differently again, and your sales tax has to line up with what you actually collected across every location. We prepare and file your return with a CPA who knows how each of these is meant to be treated, so your filing is accurate and holds up.

The three that trip owners up

How your franchise costs are taxed

The franchise fee is a capital cost

That upfront fee you paid to join the brand is usually a capital cost, not a full deduction in year one. It is treated as eligible capital property and written off gradually. We handle it correctly so you claim what you are entitled to over time.

Written off through Class 14.1

Since 2017 the franchise fee is depreciated through Class 14.1 capital cost allowance, at a 5 percent declining balance rate. See the CRA class list. We set up the class and claim it each year.

Royalties are an ongoing expense

Unlike the upfront fee, the ongoing royalties and advertising fund contributions you pay through the year are generally deductible operating expenses. We make sure they land in the right place on your return.

Sales tax has to reconcile

Your HST and GST filing has to match what you collected across every unit. We prepare and file it so the numbers tie back to your sales and there are no surprises.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.

This firm is amazingly detail focused and client centric. I have been using them since the conception of my business and without their expertise and dedication to the numbers of it all I would not be able to flourish the way I am. Furthermore, Bashar is personable, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, timely, trustworthy, genuine and all around a total win to have on any team for financial services.

As a consultant working with federal clients in Ottawa, I needed someone who understood proper documentation and clean records. The team organized everything and set up consistent reporting so nothing slips through the cracks. It has saved hours every month. Things just feel under control now.

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.

Franchise tax FAQs

Usually not in full. An upfront franchise fee is generally a capital cost rather than an immediate deduction. It is treated as eligible capital property and written off over time through Class 14.1 capital cost allowance, at a 5 percent declining balance rate. We set this up and claim it each year. You can confirm the class on the CRA class list.
Differently from the upfront fee. The royalties and advertising fund contributions you pay through the year are generally deductible operating expenses. We record them correctly so they reduce your income in the year you incur them.
Your corporate return is prepared and filed by a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). Because a franchise has treatment that a standard business return does not, having a CPA handle it means the franchise fee, royalties, and capital cost allowance are all done right.
A corporation files its T2 return within six months of its fiscal year end. Any balance owing is generally due earlier, within two or three months of year end depending on the corporation. We track your dates so nothing is missed.
Yes. We prepare and file your HST and GST returns and reconcile them to what you collected across your locations, so your sales tax lines up with your sales and is filed on time every period.
No. We are fully virtual with secure digital records. You share your documents digitally and we work from there, so there is nothing to drop off or pick up. We prepare franchise returns for owners across Canada. For the books behind the return, see our bookkeeping for franchises page.
