The basics

What a T1 personal tax return is

The T1 is the income tax and benefit return that individuals in Canada file each year with the Canada Revenue Agency. It reports the income you earned, the credits and deductions you can claim, and whether you owe a balance or are owed a refund.

If you owe tax, have to repay benefits, want to claim a refund, or simply want to keep your benefit and credit payments flowing, you need to file. Most working residents file every year, and so do many students, retirees, and newcomers. When you work with us, your return is prepared and filed by a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), so it is accurate, compliant, and ready to stand up to CRA review. We also handle self employed tax filing when your situation goes beyond a simple slip.

The April 30 deadline

Apr 30

Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and any balance owing is due April 30 as well. Filing on time keeps you clear of late filing penalties and interest, and keeps your benefit and credit payments on schedule. We file early when we can, so nothing is left to the last week of April.

How it works

Four steps to a filed return

1

Send us your slips

Share your T4s, T5s, RRSP receipts, and other slips through our secure upload. We confirm what is missing.

2

We prepare your T1

A CPA prepares your return, applies every credit and deduction you qualify for, and reviews it line by line.

3

You review and approve

We walk you through your refund or balance owing in plain language, then you give the go ahead to file.

4

We file with the CRA

We file electronically and confirm it landed. Your records stay organized in case the CRA ever asks.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.

This firm is amazingly detail focused and client centric. I have been using them since the conception of my business and without their expertise and dedication to the numbers of it all I would not be able to flourish the way I am. Furthermore, Bashar is personable, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, timely, trustworthy, genuine and all around a total win to have on any team for financial services.

As a consultant working with federal clients in Ottawa, I needed someone who understood proper documentation and clean records. The team organized everything and set up consistent reporting so nothing slips through the cracks. It has saved hours every month. Things just feel under control now.

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.

Professional and well-run business. Bashar was friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable, and the office was clean and easy to access. Everything was handled smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Income and slips

Employment income and the slips we use

For most people the starting point is employment income reported on a T4 slip from each employer. We add interest and investment income from T5 slips, pension and other income, and any other slips that apply to your year. If you also earn business or freelance income, we fold that in and can point you to small business write offs that hold up.

When your income is fully reported and every credit is claimed, the result is either a refund issued back to you or a clear balance to pay by April 30. We tell you which, and why, before anything is filed.

Common credits and deductions

The right claims can move your refund up or your balance down. We look at all of these and more:

  • RRSP contributions that lower your taxable income
  • Medical expenses for you and your dependants
  • Charitable donations to registered charities
  • Tuition amounts for eligible post secondary study
  • Basic personal amount, which lets most filers earn up to $16,129 in 2025 before paying federal tax (see canada.ca)
Who this is for

People we file T1 returns for

  • Employees with one or several T4 slips
  • Couples and families who want credits split the smart way
  • Students claiming tuition and carrying amounts forward
  • Retirees with pension, RRIF, and investment income
  • Newcomers filing their first Canadian return
  • Side earners with a job plus freelance or rental income
What to bring

What we need from you

Gather these and your return comes together quickly:

  • Income slips such as T4, T5, T4A, and T3
  • RRSP contribution receipts for the year
  • Medical and donation receipts
  • Tuition slips (T2202) for students
  • Last year's notice of assessment, if you have it
  • Direct deposit details so any refund reaches you fast
