Why two returns

Quebec residents file a federal T1 and a Quebec TP1

Quebec is the only province that collects its own personal income tax, so residents file two separate returns each year. You send the federal T1 to the Canada Revenue Agency and the provincial TP1, the Quebec income tax return, to Revenu Quebec. Both returns cover the same tax year and both carry an April 30 deadline. We prepare and file both for you, so the numbers agree and nothing slips through the cracks.

Who needs to file

Do you have to file a Quebec TP1?

You generally need to file a Quebec personal tax return if either of these applies to you for the year:

  • You were a resident of Quebec on December 31, which usually means you lived there at year end.
  • You were not a Quebec resident but earned income from Quebec, such as employment, business, or property income inside the province.

If you are not sure where you are considered a resident, or you moved into or out of Quebec during the year, we will sort out your residency and file the right returns. The same logic flows through to your federal T1 with the CRA.

How we file your Quebec return

Two returns, one smooth process

1

Gather your slips

We collect your federal slips and your Quebec relevés so every source of income is accounted for on both returns.

2

Prepare the T1

A CPA prepares your federal T1 for the CRA, claiming every federal credit and deduction you are entitled to.

3

Prepare the TP1

We build your Quebec TP1 for Revenu Quebec and apply the provincial credits that apply to you.

4

Reconcile and file

We cross check both returns so they agree, then file them on time. Your filing is prepared and filed by a CPA.

Make the most of it

Common Quebec credits we look for

The Quebec TP1 carries its own set of provincial credits that do not appear on your federal return. When we prepare your return, we review the ones that commonly apply, including the solidarity tax credit, the tax credit for childcare expenses, the tax credit for medical expenses, the tax credit for home support of seniors, and credits tied to tuition and donations. We claim what you are owed and nothing that puts your return at risk.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.

This firm is amazingly detail focused and client centric. I have been using them since the conception of my business and without their expertise and dedication to the numbers of it all I would not be able to flourish the way I am. Furthermore, Bashar is personable, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, timely, trustworthy, genuine and all around a total win to have on any team for financial services.

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.

Quebec personal tax FAQs

No. Everything is handled online with secure digital records, so there is nothing to drop off or pick up. You share your documents digitally and we work from there, anywhere in Canada. For clients whose bookkeeping we also manage, we run everything in QuickBooks Online.
Quebec collects its own personal income tax, so residents file a federal T1 with the Canada Revenue Agency and a separate provincial return, the TP1, with Revenu Quebec. We prepare and file both so they agree.
The deadline to file your Quebec income tax return is April 30, the same date as the federal T1. If April 30 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it moves to the next business day. Any balance owing is also due by April 30.
You generally file a TP1 if you were a resident of Quebec at the end of the year, or if you were not a resident but earned income from Quebec sources such as employment, business, or property income in the province.
Yes. We handle both. We prepare your personal tax returns federally on the T1 and provincially on the TP1, and we reconcile them so the numbers match across both filings.
Your TP1 and T1 are prepared and filed by a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), so your filing is accurate, compliant, and ready to stand up to CRA review.
