Built for the self employed

Tax filing made for how you actually work

When you work for yourself, your taxes get more involved than a single T4. You report your business income and expenses, you pay into the Canada Pension Plan on your net earnings, and you may owe HST or GST once you grow. We handle all of it from one place, so your numbers add up and your filing is clean. Browse all our tax services if you also run a corporation or need personal filing.

Two dates to remember

Your self employed deadlines

June 15

The deadline to file your self employed return. Because you report business income, the CRA gives you and your spouse extra time past the usual April 30 filing date.

April 30

The deadline to pay any balance owing. Even though you file by June 15, interest starts on a balance still owed after April 30, so we plan ahead so you are not caught short.

What we handle

Everything in your self employed return

The T2125

Your statement of business or professional activities, the form that reports your self employed income and expenses.

Deductible expenses

We claim the write offs that hold up, from home office to vehicle to supplies and software.

CPP for self employed

We calculate your Canada Pension Plan contribution on your net self employment income and build it into your return.

Tax instalments

If you owe enough, the CRA asks for instalments through the year. We set the schedule so it never surprises you.

HST and GST

Once you cross the small supplier threshold, you register and charge sales tax. We manage your HST and GST filing.

Record keeping

We keep the record keeping the CRA requires so every claim is backed by proof.

Personal tax too

Your self employed income flows onto your T1. We coordinate it with your personal tax returns.

Prepared by a CPA

Your full return is prepared and filed by a Chartered Professional Accountant and ready to stand up to CRA review.

Good to know

The numbers that affect you

  • CPP on self employment income. When you work for yourself, you pay both halves of the Canada Pension Plan yourself, at the combined self employed rate, calculated on your net business income. We work it into your return so there is no shortfall at filing time.
  • Instalments when net tax owing tops $3,000. The CRA may ask you to pay tax by instalments if your net tax owing is more than $3,000 in the current year and in one of the two prior years. We set the schedule so the payments are spread out and planned.
  • HST or GST once you pass $30,000. You stop being a small supplier and must register for the GST/HST once your taxable revenues go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. We watch the line and handle registration when it is time.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.

This firm is amazingly detail focused and client centric. I have been using them since the conception of my business and without their expertise and dedication to the numbers of it all I would not be able to flourish the way I am. Furthermore, Bashar is personable, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, timely, trustworthy, genuine and all around a total win to have on any team for financial services.

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.

Professional and well-run business. Bashar was friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable, and the office was clean and easy to access. Everything was handled smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend.
