The corporate tax return T2, explained
The T2 is the federal corporation income tax return. Every incorporated business in Canada has to file one for each tax year, even a corporation that earned no income, sat dormant, or finished the year at a loss. The return reports your income, deductions, and tax payable to the Canada Revenue Agency, and it is built from your year end financial statements. Because the numbers carry real consequences, every T2 we file is prepared and filed by a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
A clear path from books to filing
Close your year
We reconcile your accounts and lock down a clean set of books. Tidy records are what a sound T2 is built on.
Build the statements
We prepare your year end income statement and balance sheet, then map them into the GIFI schedules the CRA requires.
Prepare the return
A CPA prepares the full T2, applies every deduction you qualify for, and confirms the tax payable before anything is filed.
File and follow up
We file electronically, walk you through any balance owing or instalments, and keep everything ready for CRA review.

When the T2 is due and when you pay
Corporations file the T2 within six months of the end of their fiscal year. Miss it and the CRA charges late filing penalties on top of any tax owing.
The balance of tax is generally due two months after the end of the tax year, which lands before the filing deadline, so paying and filing are two separate dates to watch.
Certain Canadian controlled private corporations that claim the small business deduction and meet the income conditions get three months to pay their balance.
The split between filing and paying trips up a lot of owners. You have six months to file the return, but the money is generally due sooner, at two months after year end (three months for certain Canadian controlled private corporations that claim the small business deduction and meet the income conditions). If your corporation owed more than a small amount of tax last year, the CRA may also require monthly or quarterly instalments through the year rather than one lump sum. We work out your instalment schedule so you are never caught short. See the CRA balance due day rules for the full conditions.
Lower tax for qualifying corporations
The small business deduction lowers the federal tax rate on active business income for Canadian controlled private corporations, up to a yearly business limit. It is one of the most valuable breaks available to an incorporated business, and claiming it correctly also affects when your balance of tax is due. We confirm whether your corporation qualifies, claim the deduction on your T2, and keep the supporting numbers clean so the claim is ready to stand up to CRA review.
Built on clean books
A T2 is only as accurate as the records behind it. We pair filing with our bookkeeping services so your statements and return agree to the penny.
Sales tax handled too
Most incorporated businesses also remit sales tax. We cover your HST and GST filing so every CRA account stays current.
Operating in Quebec
If your corporation files in Quebec, we prepare the Quebec corporate tax (CO-17) to match your federal T2.

E-commerce can get complicated fast with fees and multiple payment platforms. Better Books Canada broke it down in a way that actually made sense. Reports arrive on time and highlight what needs attention. It’s been easier to focus on growth instead of trying to reconcile transactions late at night.![]()

Bashar is incredibly competent, knowledgeable and honest. He is not a bookkeeper that likes to meddle in grey areas. He has worked for the CRA and does everything he can to protect and inform his clients. He provides an incredible amount of value compared to the amount that he charges, and it’s truly been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend Bashar if anyone is looking for bookkeeping services in Ottawa.![]()
